Mercedes-Benz racing transporter (“The Blue Wonder”) with MB 300 SLR #658 – J.M. Fangio

LEGRAND 1:87 plastic model set, very detailed design and printing, filigree rims, length: 79mm

This spectacular transporter with its striking, futuristic design was built in 1955 at the request of MB racing manager Alfred Neubauer, on the extended chassis of a Mercedes-Benz 300 S and with the engine of the 300 SL. The so-called “Blue Wonder” was the fastest truck in the world for many years and was used exclusively to transport Mercedes-Benz racing cars. From 1956, the racing transporter served as an exhibition vehicle and eye-catcher in the USA until it was scrapped in the 1960s. A perfect replica can be seen today in the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart.

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR with starting number 658 was driven by Juan Manuel Fangio (ARG) – one of the most important Formula 1 drivers in history – at the famous Mille Miglia in 1955. Fangio started the race without a co-driver and left the start ramp in Brescia at 6:58 a.m. – corresponding to his starting number 658, which was the time of the start.
