For the SBB’s Rail 2000 project, BBC and SLM produced four prototypes of a four-axle electric locomotive made of lightweight steel. The locomotives, designated Re 4/4 IV by SBB, were intensively tested by SBB from 1982. With the  160 km/h locomotives, not only was the new rectifier technology tested, but also new color schemes – all four locomotives were painted differently.  It was not until 1986 that the Re 4/4 IVs were given a uniform color scheme in traffic red with the Bahn 2000 advertising. From 1994, the Südostbahn (SOB) took over the locomotives operated as Re 446 and turned them into rolling billboards. With the introduction of the Stadler Flirt at the SOB in 2019, all Re 4/4 IVs were sold to EDG.
