Description
The VT18.16 are high-quality multiple units and were intended in particular for international use. They were built by VEB Waggonbau Görlitz from 1963. The vehicles were used on international services to Scandinavia, Austria and Czechoslovakia. The train route was known as Vindobona via Prague to Vienna. The trains to and from Scandinavia only ran with two middle cars due to the length of the rail ferries. The SVT of this series ran as Vindobona to Vienna for the last time in 1979 – this was due to compensation payments from ÖBB, as they no longer had suitable railcars for regular use on this connection. The last international services were operated at the beginning of the 1980s as Karlex and Karola to Karlsbad.
