Description
At the start of operations in 1971, Amtrak had no rolling stock of its own and instead used locomotives and passenger cars from various other railroad companies in their original livery. From 1972, however, all cars were repainted in Amtrak colors (Phase I).
For an exhibition in New York, the Amtrak E8A diesel locomotive with the road number 4316 was given a special paint job in black. This color scheme was later referred to as the “Day One” livery.
