With the electrification of the railroad lines in Bavaria in the 1920s, the Reichsbahn was also looking for electric shunting locomotives for its stations around Munich. A condition for the development of the new locomotives was that as many parts of the E91 and E52 as possible were used to make maintenance more economical.
From 1927, AEG and SSW delivered the E60 to the Deutsche Reichsbahn in three series. The locomotives were initially stationed in Munich, Rosenheim and Garmisch. Due to its appearance with the long and low front end and the driver’s cab at the end, it was also popularly known as an iron. When delivered, the E60 had an HIIs2D pantograph with two collector strips, which was replaced by an SBS 10 when it entered service with the German Federal Railroad. The locomotives were rebuilt in 1958/59 and the most striking change was the addition of the shunting platforms at the ends. It was not until 1983 that the last BR 160 of BW Heidelberg was taken out of service.
