The ongoing electrification of the Western Railway created a need for electric freight locomotives. The electrical part of the total of 22 locomotives was supplied by AEG, the mechanical part of the first 15 locomotives by the locomotive factory StEG. The remaining 7 machines were produced by the Floridsdorf locomotive factory. The locomotives were used by the Deutsche Reichsbahn as E88.2. They returned to Austria at the beginning of the 1950s and were used again as the 1280 series. By 1976, all the machines had been decommissioned.
