At the beginning of the 1960s, the DSB modernized its fleet of coaches for express trains. The UIC type Y in welded all-steel design with compartments was chosen as the future standard wagon. With a length of only 24.5 m, the vehicles were ideally suited to the DSB rail ferries. The relatively wide coach body in 2nd class meant that four seats could be installed next to each other.

From 1971, the coaches were delivered in a modernized version, older coaches were adapted accordingly: The entrances were given 3 steps instead of the previous 2, fixed rear lights were installed at the ends and the number of seats per compartment in 2nd class was reduced from eight to six.
The first batch of UIC-Y wagons was still in DSB wine red, but from 1972 the red DSB “Design” design was introduced.
