At the end of the 1970s, TUI decided to have its own passenger coaches built in order to be able to offer travelers on package tours the journey to their vacation destination from a single source. These were train sets built from scratch and realized according to the company’s own plans, which were put into service from 1978. They were used as wing trains to and from Hamburg and Dortmund, from where they served the most important vacation destinations with direct connections every week. Passengers were welcomed at the destination stations by local tour guides and usually taken to their vacation accommodation by coach, similar to the way passengers were used to with package tours. The trains were strikingly painted in beige, carmine red, pastel orange and nut brown, inspired by the so-called Pop livery of the German Federal Railways. The furnishings were of a high standard.
Each TUI Ferienexpress also had a carriage in the middle of the train known as the TUI Treff with a bar and dining area.
