The Bayrische Zugspitzbahn of the Bayrische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG is one of the oldest mountain railroads in Germany alongside the Wendelsteinbahn. The route leads from Garmisch Partenkirchen directly to the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain. The route begins with the valley line between Garmisch Partenkirchen and Grainau, from where the steep section to the Zugspitze becomes a cog railroad. The valley locomotives 1 and 4 and the 4-axle passenger carriages are still in use.
