Deutsche Bahn refers to the new generation of Intercity Express (ICE) high-speed trains for long-distance passenger transportation as the ICE 4 or BR 412.
Siemens Mobility / Bombardier was commissioned with the development and construction of an initial 170 trains in 2011.
Initially, twelve-car variants will be ready for use from December 2017, followed by seven-car trains from December 2020.
A total of up to 300 new ICE trains are to be purchased. The trains are intended as multiple units for passenger transport.
They are powered by several independently driven carriages, so-called power cars, which are distributed throughout the train.
The new ICE trains are made up of five types of carriages: End cars, powered middle cars (“Powercar”), non-powered middle cars, dining cars and service cars.
The trains can also be used coupled in double traction. The exterior design of the trains won the Red Dot Design Award in 2015.
The first series of 130 multiple units comprises 45 seven-car and 85 twelve-car units.
 
The new design of the ICE fleet was presented in September 2019 with 412 034 (multiple unit 9034). In future, Germany’s fastest climate protectors will wear a green/red stripe on the two end cars.
