The class Ae 4/4 is a powerful bogie locomotive without running axles operated by the Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon Railway (BLS). It was built in the years 1944/1945 in eight
units were procured as a result of the steadily growing freight traffic on the Lötschberg line. The specifications at the time included a towing capacity of 400 t for a 27 ‰ gradient at a speed of 75 km/h. The four Ae 4/4 253 to 256 were later converted into the two Ae 8/8 274 and 275.
