Jägerndorfer electric locomotive ÖBB BR1189.05 Crocodile brown Ep.III – sound
When the then Austrian Federal Railways BBÖ needed express locomotives for the ramps of the Arlbergbahn in the early 1920s, they used the proven SBB Crocodiles as a model and thus also adopted the typical appearance with the two long, flat front ends. The first examples were put into service in 1923, followed by a further 16 machines of this series by 1927. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich in 1938, the Deutsche Reichsbahn designated the Crocodiles as E89 (1100) and E89.1 (1100.1). After the Second World War, the remaining machines were transferred to the re-established Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) as ÖBB 1089 and ÖBB1189. The locomotives were in service until 1979. After the end of the war, some crocodiles were also used in Switzerland.
