DB tried to revive the travel culture that had been pushed into the background with the decline of the TEE connections and the success of the two-class IC trains. The traditional tourist route along the Rhine was retained and the legendary, internationally esteemed name “Rheingold” was chosen for the train. DB no longer wanted to build completely new wagons, as in 1962. The train’s seating coaches came from the last series of Avmz 111.2 compartment coaches and the last independently developed series of Apmz 122 1st class large-capacity coaches, both with swing-sliding doors. The type WRmh 132 was used as the dining car. In the end, the club car of type WGmh 804, which was converted from an Avmh 121, met the requirements of a luxurious train with a tourist orientation. An external feature of the Rheingold train was the orange dividing stripe between the red and beige colors. Normally, the train consisted of up to nine carriages, including up to four Avm, two Apm, a dining car and a club car.
